Granite Insights

Granite is a very hard igneous rock that contains a lot of feldspar, quartz and other minerals. It is one of the three most common rocks on earth. Granite forms when magma cools and crystallizes before it makes its way to the earth’s surface.
Granite is quarried world wide in many different countries. Quarries can be found in Brazil, Ukraine, India, Canada, Africa, Iceland and the United States to name a few. The largest granite quarry on earth is located in Mount Airy, NC.
Granite is a very versatile material with thousands of uses and can be found worldwide in a myriad of projects old and new. Helsinki Central Station in Finland, The Pantheon in Italy, Monuments at Mahabalipuram in India, Mount Rushmore in the United States and St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica in Canada are just some of the granite structures throughout the world that prove granite is able to withstand the tests of time and the elements.
Granite is versatile, beautiful and restorable if necessary. It adds beauty and durability to all sorts of projects, ranging from commercial to residential. And, since granite can be renewed and restored, it is a great investment that will remain beautiful for years to come.

Sealing & Protecting

Your granite may need a little extra protection to protect it from staining.

Impregnating/Sealing Granite

Some natural stone types are more porous than others, and the more porous a natural stone is, the more susceptible it is to staining. We may recommend that you have your granite sealed to enhance its stain resistance. We say, “may” because not all stone needs to be sealed. Highly polished stone may not even take an impregnating sealer. But, if sealing is recommended, know that sealing represents an inexpensive, preventative measure against stain damage because it buys you time to wipe up spills before they become stains.

How to Test If Your Stone Needs To Be Re-Sealed

Spill a few drops of water on several areas of your granite surface, especially where they get the most use. Allow the water to dwell for a few minutes, then wipe it away. After a couple of seconds, if you see that the area where the water was remains darker, indicating that the water was absorbed into the stone, it’s time to re-seal.

Care & Cleaning

Some helpful tips:
  • Use a quality neutral cleaner on your stone surfaces.
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners.
  • Wipe up spills as soon as possible.
  • For countertops, use a cutting board for food prep.
  • Be sure to reseal as needed.

Does Granite Require Maintenance?

The short answer is yes, granite does require maintenance. Regular cleaning with a stone safe cleaner is a great for simple day-to-day maintenance, but over time, floors can develop grout lines that just won’t come clean, shiny scratches, and increasingly obvious traffic patterns. Countertops can become scratched, dull and etched.
As these problems develop, you become more and more dissatisfied with the appearance of the floors or other granite surfaces until it’s time for another round of professional restoration. Ask us about customizing a regularly scheduled maintenance program to keep your granite looking great all the time, without the need for periodic restoration.
